"Maus" - The Book they want to be banned - What you can do for yourself - Politicians hate this trick
| Cover (c) Pantheon |
Art Spiegelman's comic "Maus" is about the time of the Third Reich in Germany. The central character of the story is Spiegelman's father, Wladek (1906-1982), a Holocaust survivor. In numerous sessions, the father tells his son the story of a survivor, as the subtitle of the book is called; the comic thus addresses both the Holocaust and the painful memory of it. Spiegelman puts the story told by the father down on paper, not without going into the current situation of the narrating father, who has developed into a reclusive, stingy and stubborn old man and, despite his Holocaust experiences, discriminates against black people. The difficult relationship between son and father and the suicide of the mother are also taken up as topics.
The story is told as a fable. Through the animal metaphor (and the medium of comics), Spiegelman keeps his distance from the horror that is being told:
“I need to show the events and memory of the Holocaust without showing them. I want to show the masking of these events in their representation." (Spiegelmann, quoted from James E. Young)
In January 2022, it was announced that a school board in McMinn County, Tennessee, made a decision the previous year to ban the use of the comic in the classroom. The ten-member panel unanimously voted to ban the comic from classrooms after initially discussing partial censorship.
However, the book makes an important contribution to looking into this time and not forgetting it. With more and more schools talking about banning certain books, it's time to think about what to do about it. The simplest trick politicians hate: buy the book yourself. This is how this important cultural asset is preserved.
There are now two books, "Maus" and "Maus II", as well as the anthology "The Complete Maus". You can order them from AMAZON.com right here:

ARTE Documentary: Lamentations of Judas I ARTE Documentary
Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: In South Africa a small community of Angolan veterans survives, having fought for the Apartheid regime against the communist government of their own country in the 1970s. The ex-soldiers agree to make a film about Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Christ. At the same time they slowly tell fragments of their violent past. In the village of Pomfret, South Africa, survives a small community of former Angolan combatants, recruited after 1975 by the apartheid regime to fight the communist government of their newly independent country. Nicknamed "the terrible ones" during the twenty-year civil war that followed, the former Battalion 32, who had settled for several years on the edge of an asbestos mine, were ordered to leave the area. With nowhere to go, these exiles fallen on the wrong side of history cling to their corner of the bush with empty houses. They agree to shoot with the director a film about Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Christ. At the same time, they gradually deliver snippets of their violent past. Unarmed soldiers In the stripped beauty of this ghost village, similar to post-apocalyptic Antiquity, Judas' poetic monologue and war tales weave a meditative dialogue between myth and history. The complex heritage of colonialism, the impossible legitimacy of wars, the responsibility of the individual caught up in collective upheavals, the possibility of forgiveness and forgetting: so many themes which are poignantly embodied in the voices and bodies of these unarmed soldiers. The Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral impresses with its monumentality and the magnificence of its stained glass windows. Glass painting workshops still populate the surroundings of the building, like Maison Lorin, one of the last 19th century establishments still in operation. At its head, รlodie Vally contributes to the safeguard of an invaluable cultural heritage. For Jacques Loire, master glassmaker, the art of stained glass also represents a vocation. At the age of 80, the man who designed with his father Gabriel the imposing blue stained glass windows for the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin has not lost any of his creativity. ARTE Documentary: Alphonse Mucha I ARTE Documentary
Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: WATCH 'Chagall - between two worlds': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tTij1l1PEY At the end of the 19th century, the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) ranked among the pioneers of the Art Nouveau movement. Virtually overnight, he became famous in Paris thanks to his posters of star actress Sarah Bernhardt. But at the height of his fame, Mucha left Paris to realise his lifetime project “The Slav Epic”. He worked on the monumental cycle of paintings for 18 years – only to meet fierce criticism upon completion. His iconic posters are almost better known than his name, and yet Alfons Mucha is considered one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau. Inspired by Byzantine art, the Czech graphic designer (1860-1939), who came to Paris in 1887, rose to fame almost overnight thanks to a poster of actress Sarah Bernhardt from her play, Gismonda. Six years of fruitful collaboration with the actress followed, with multiple portraits in which he imposed a colourful style with sinuous lines, enhanced with botanical motifs. However, at the height of his career, the brilliant designer left his activities in Paris to devote himself to his life's work: The Slavic Epic. For eighteen years, Mucha worked on this set of twenty paintings retracing the symbolic history of the Slavic people. From the 1960s and the emergence of the hippie movement, Alfons Mucha's Art Nouveau posters were once again the subject of cult. Among a thousand recognizable, they are made up of arabesques, halos crowning female subjects and of great ornamental and decorative richness, as evidenced by his many works intended for advertising. While its influence is still exerted on certain visual artists today, this documentary shows how the genius of the Czech poster artist is timeless. ARTE Documentary: The Prophet's Exile I ARTE Documentary
Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: How Muhammad's exile from Mecca to Medina (the Hegira) was pivotal in the history of Islam, and the difference between Meccan suras and Medinan suras. In sura IV, verses 157 and 158, the Qur'an relates the crucifixion of Jesus in a very different way from the Christian tradition. Jesus is crucified there "in appearance". Would those who witnessed the scene have been the victims of an illusion? Has anyone else been crucified in his place? Did Jesus Really Die on the Cross? Jesus, the founding figure of Christianity, is also an exceptional character in the Qur'an. Why? How? 'Or' What ? Based on this question, Gรฉrard Mordillat and Jรฉrรดme Prieur (Corpus Christi, The Origin of Christianity, The Apocalypse) are conducting a survey of twenty-six of the world's greatest specialists, including researchers of the Muslim tradition: historians of the beginnings of Islam, philologists, epigraphists, historians of Eastern Christianity, historians of rabbinical Judaism and specialists in the history of the Qur'an. The seven episodes take as their starting point a careful reading of all the terms of two verses of sura IV of the Qur'an, evoking in their own way the crucifixion of Jesus "in appearance", before gradually opening the discussion to all with questions posed by the text, in its theological, literary and historical dimensions. It is at the crossroads of the three monotheistic religions, in the continuity of the Judaism of Moses and of the Judeo-Christianity of Jesus, that this investigation seeks to reconstitute the emergence of Islam in a pagan region, that was, however, very marked by biblical influences and the proximity of the Syriac churches. ARTE Documentary: A Merry Christmas to One and All? I ARTE Documentary
Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Christmas is a time of great happiness and a bumper period for big business but for some it is a time of exploitation and hardship. An investigation in Germany, France and Eastern Europe of the Christmas workers for whom the festive season often leaves a bitter aftertaste. For more than half a century, Christmas has stood out as the celebration of over-consumption, fuelled by frenetic globalization and the recent explosion in online commerce. This gigantic industry is worth more than 100 billion euros per year in France and Germany alone. If the holidays undoubtedly benefit large groups, they also exacerbate the exploitation of certain already precarious populations, such as young Moldovans who spend the period away from their families to deliver parcels to Germany for minimal wages, or Georgians who exercise the dangerous profession of picking pine cones intended to decorate European homes. Unfair competition From Hanover to Avignon, ARTE investigates the shadow workers for whom the Christmas spirit is not at all joyous. Meeting with representatives of this mistreated foreign workforce, but also artisans and small traders who are struggling to keep their heads above water in the face of the slashed prices offered on the Internet. Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: WATCH our Jane Goodall documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqGG0brbCPY Presenting the final episode in our series on the fabulous biodiversity of Costa Rica. This episode focuses on the Central American nation’s rich waters where turtles, whales and hammerhead sharks congregate to reproduce. But this diversity is threatened by warming waters, pollution and overfishing. Costa Rica's conservation efforts have so far focused on land. Only a tiny part of the country’s maritime area, ten times the size of its land surface, is currently protected. Attracted by the mild temperatures, hundreds of species (humpback whales, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles ...) meet there to mate and give birth to their offspring. But the road is becoming more and more perilous for this marine fauna which has converged there for millennia, traversing the oceans of the whole world in the course of its migrations. Pollution, warming waters and overfishing are now making their shelters off Costa Rica into besieged sanctuaries. Their survival is essential for the ecological balance of these precious ecosystems, and beyond, of all the oceans. Abundant ecosystems Costa Rica is a gem without equal on the planet. Not only has it put an end to the destruction of its forests, but it has also become, in just thirty years, a veritable sanctuary for more than 5% of the world's biodiversity. A network of national parks unique in the world protects its teeming ecosystems. Despite countless challenges, the preservation of these natural environments and their fauna is more than ever a priority for this small country in Central America.
