ARTE Documentary: Lamentations of Judas I ARTE Documentary

Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: In South Africa a small community of Angolan veterans survives, having fought for the Apartheid regime against the communist government of their own country in the 1970s. The ex-soldiers agree to make a film about Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Christ. At the same time they slowly tell fragments of their violent past. In the village of Pomfret, South Africa, survives a small community of former Angolan combatants, recruited after 1975 by the apartheid regime to fight the communist government of their newly independent country. Nicknamed "the terrible ones" during the twenty-year civil war that followed, the former Battalion 32, who had settled for several years on the edge of an asbestos mine, were ordered to leave the area. With nowhere to go, these exiles fallen on the wrong side of history cling to their corner of the bush with empty houses. They agree to shoot with the director a film about Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Christ. At the same time, they gradually deliver snippets of their violent past. Unarmed soldiers In the stripped beauty of this ghost village, similar to post-apocalyptic Antiquity, Judas' poetic monologue and war tales weave a meditative dialogue between myth and history. The complex heritage of colonialism, the impossible legitimacy of wars, the responsibility of the individual caught up in collective upheavals, the possibility of forgiveness and forgetting: so many themes which are poignantly embodied in the voices and bodies of these unarmed soldiers.
