Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Christmas is a time of great happiness and a bumper period for big business but for some it is a time of exploitation and hardship. An investigation in Germany, France and Eastern Europe of the Christmas workers for whom the festive season often leaves a bitter aftertaste. For more than half a century, Christmas has stood out as the celebration of over-consumption, fuelled by frenetic globalization and the recent explosion in online commerce. This gigantic industry is worth more than 100 billion euros per year in France and Germany alone. If the holidays undoubtedly benefit large groups, they also exacerbate the exploitation of certain already precarious populations, such as young Moldovans who spend the period away from their families to deliver parcels to Germany for minimal wages, or Georgians who exercise the dangerous profession of picking pine cones intended to decorate European homes. Unfair competition From Hanover to Avignon, ARTE investigates the shadow workers for whom the Christmas spirit is not at all joyous. Meeting with representatives of this mistreated foreign workforce, but also artisans and small traders who are struggling to keep their heads above water in the face of the slashed prices offered on the Internet.
