Content of the Lesson: WATCH our Jane Goodall documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqGG0brbCPY Presenting the final episode in our series on the fabulous biodiversity of Costa Rica. This episode focuses on the Central American nation’s rich waters where turtles, whales and hammerhead sharks congregate to reproduce. But this diversity is threatened by warming waters, pollution and overfishing. Costa Rica's conservation efforts have so far focused on land. Only a tiny part of the country’s maritime area, ten times the size of its land surface, is currently protected. Attracted by the mild temperatures, hundreds of species (humpback whales, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles ...) meet there to mate and give birth to their offspring. But the road is becoming more and more perilous for this marine fauna which has converged there for millennia, traversing the oceans of the whole world in the course of its migrations. Pollution, warming waters and overfishing are now making their shelters off Costa Rica into besieged sanctuaries. Their survival is essential for the ecological balance of these precious ecosystems, and beyond, of all the oceans. Abundant ecosystems Costa Rica is a gem without equal on the planet. Not only has it put an end to the destruction of its forests, but it has also become, in just thirty years, a veritable sanctuary for more than 5% of the world's biodiversity. A network of national parks unique in the world protects its teeming ecosystems. Despite countless challenges, the preservation of these natural environments and their fauna is more than ever a priority for this small country in Central America.
