Content of the Lesson: The apocalyptic blast in the Port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 led to renewed anger at those in power. Protests have crossed religious boundaries as the Lebanese people rage against corruption, nepotism, gross economic mismanagement and squandering of resources. How did a country with so much to offer allow itself to get into such a dire situation? Will the Land of Cedars be able to bounce back? Apocalyptic, the double explosion of August 4, 2020 in the port of Beirut once again stoked the wind of revolt, which had risen on October 17, 2019 in Lebanon, before being violently repressed. Once again, by the thousands, Lebanese of all generations and faiths have taken to the streets to demand the departure of the incompetent and corrupt political class which has despoiled their country for forty years. The old Middle East vault, the model of the region in the 1950s and 1960s, is in agony, plagued by exponential inflation, fragmented by social inequalities and threatened by famine. Hosted by foreign powers and mafia clans, the Land of the Cedars has also had to face the influx of 1.5 million Syrian refugees since 2011. Born after the civil war, young people, torn between the temptation of exile and the desire for change, want to put an end to the politico-confessional system which has plagued society. They demand a secular and democratic state. Ccan Lebanon reinvent itself? Is the country which anticipated the Arab Spring in 2005 during the "Cedar Revolution" doomed to chaos? Or can the unprecedented economic, social and political crisis that it is going through bring about major changes?
