After centuries of deforestation, Costa Rican nature is taking back its rights. Its thousand-year-old forest, ravaged by intensive agriculture and animal husbandry, was on the way, thirty years ago, to giving way to alternating fields and pastures as far as the eye can see. Today, a thick green mantle once again covers half of the country, from the Pacific coasts to the Caribbean Sea to the sides of volcanoes. But if it's man that takes care of the recovering forest, the real artisans of reforestation are the animals that inhabit it: jaguars, tapirs, white-lipped peccaries, spider monkeys, green macaws ... These species contribute to shape, rebuild and bring to life a nature which, without them, would wither away. Abundant ecosystems Costa Rica is a gem without equal on the planet. Not only has it put an end to the destruction of its forests, but it has also become, in just thirty years, a veritable sanctuary for more than 5% of the world's biodiversity. A network of national parks unique in the world protects its teeming ecosystems. Dry and humid forests, maritime parks ...: despite countless challenges, the preservation of these natural environments and their fauna is more than ever a priority for this small country in Central America.
