Each person’s reasons are unique for living this life of perpetual travel, existing in America’s wide open spaces amid the sound world of the rails. The tranquility of the great outdoors of wild America clashes with the nature of the freight train, a huge metallic and serpentine beast, in which Cristina travels clandestinely in search of freedom. She follows in the footsteps of the USA's historic hobos, these itinerant worker hit by the Great Depression who traveled alone on trains to sell their labour across the country. Over time, the hobo became a figure of the lone rebellion, refusing any system. With just a sleeping bag and a water bottle as luggage, Karen and Ivy also embark on a long-haul journey, one to escape a cramped suburban life, the other to overcome a childhood trauma. French director Arno Bitschy followed these three marginalized young people into the nomadic, and extreme, lifestyle they chose for themselves. After years of running away and wandering around, Ivy, now 40, has settled down in San Francisco. She talks about the gentrification of the former hippie capital and the expulsions it is facing.
