Content of the Lesson: The coronavirus pandemic has revealed the weaknesses of many European countries: inadequate health systems, lack of preparation and weak economies, not to mention corruption. Can the European Union come together to fight the crisis? Italian Cristina Sfriso is bitter: as a glassblower in Murano, she has had no income since March. While she can theoretically benefit from aid, this is more difficult in practice. Despite the government's promptly announced stabilization and economic stimulus measures, the Italian administration is overwhelmed by the influx of demands. The coronavirus crisis thus sheds light on the weak points of many European countries, from weakened and ill-prepared hospital structures to inadequate health insurance systems, which leave hundreds of thousands of Europeans without social protection after the disappearance of their employment. The pandemic has also shown that some politicians, like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, are trying to turn the situation to their advantage by putting pressure on the media. Are the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament working together to maintain what can be achieved by the unity of the Twenty-Seven, without forgetting the devastating effects of the financial crisis, and the responses to it? In July, the European Council, chaired by former Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, voted in favour of a financial contribution to the tune of 1.5 trillion euros. The Parliament and the Commission, chaired respectively by David Sassoli and Ursula von der Leyen, are slow to give their agreement...
