His case for the historical Jesus is based on ad-hoc assertions about the Gospels, other books in the new testament, and Roman sources. Ehrman argues that Jesus was a real historical figure who lived in Palestine during the first century CE and that he was a Jewish teacher and preacher who attracted a following of disciples. Ehrman believes that Jesus was executed by the Roman authorities, likely for political reasons, and that his followers continued to proclaim his message and teachings after his death.
