Trade Wars I ARTE Documentary
SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/artedocumentary?sub_confirmation=1 In 1839 the British declared war on China in the name of free trade wanting to sell opium to the Chinese, just one of the many wars for economic supremacy between East and West. Ever since, disagreements between nations can be understood as economic disputes. This is the story of trade wars through history. By launching its fleet against the Chinese junks in 1889, the British Empire declared one of the first wars motivated by economic interests alone. Deploring a largely negative trade balance with China, the United Kingdom wanted to sell it its opium stocks by force. In the face of resistance from the Qing Empire, the British went on the offensive in the name of free trade, which they believed had peacemaking virtues. Since this exemplary history of ambiguous relations between states, from cooperation to fierce competition, trade wars have been repeated, more and more sophisticated but not always less bloody. The advent of the industrial revolution, liberalism and then globalisation have multiplied the sources of conflicts, between territorial conquests, espionage, the capture of knowledge by blackmail or even disinformation ... This documentary, which lists past or present battles, open or secret, sheds light on the mysteries and economic tensions of a globalized world, where trade wars are now perceived as a normal competitive activity. A fascinating decryption of their laws and workings, nourished by analyzes of political scientists, journalists and economists as well as that of Christian Harbulot, the director of ... the Paris School of Economic Warfare.
