Content of the Lesson: Second part of the documentary looking at the explosion of youth culture and protest from 1949 to the present day: From punk and reggae in 1970s Britain to hip-hop during the Arab spring up to the #MeToo movement and BLM protests. At the dawn of the 1980s, London-based group The Clash brought together punks and young Jamaican immigrants who were fans of reggae in their denunciation of discrimination. In France in 1983, a whole generation gathered around the dream of a multicultural society during the march for equality and against racism. In the early 1990s, the gap widened between young people living in the ghettos and the rest of society. Out of the United States, hip-hop becomes the mouthpiece of the suburbs while some invent a dreamlike universe with techno and rave parties. During the 2000s, the explosion of the Internet and social networks transformed artistic creations. It also renewed the forms of political and social youth protests, from the Arab Spring to the #MeToo movement, Black Lives Matter and climate change protests. From the 1950s through to today, each generation has initiated its cultural revolution through music, literature and cinema. On an eclectic and electric soundtrack - from 1950s jazz to 2000s rap via funk, disco, rock n'roll or techno - directors Aurélien Guégan and Marie Durrieu paint a refreshing portrait of the revolts of youth over the ages. Using archival footage this deep historical dive is an ode to idealism and the fury for life.
