ARTE Documentary: 70 Years of Youth Revolt - Part 1 I ARTE Documentary
Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Looking back at the social movements, revolts and youth subcultures from the past-war period to the present day. After the second world war the left-bank of Paris became a mecca for jazz and alternative living, youth culture was born with trailblazing American movies, and rock ‘n’ roll became the soundtrack to a generation that wanted to change everything. From Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the Rolling Stones to the New Wave, from hippies to punks: a story of disobedience between idealism and the spirit of revolt. In post-war Paris, in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, jazz clubs became the haunt of freedom-loving youths. Outside this privileged island, the discomfort of middle-class youth is embodied for the first time in cinema in 'The Fury of Living' starring James Dean, who was propelled to the rank of teenage idol. In the mid-1960s, ten years after the arrival of rock'n'roll, the English wave, from the Who to the Rolling Stones, was exorcising the frustrations of youth. In France, independent cinema, led by Truffaut, was reinventing roles for young women, while in the Netherlands the Provos collective was passionate about ecology. From the hippie movement to the emergence of black pride to the rise of revolutionary anti-capitalist cinema, the counter-culture accompanies the global rebellion against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. In the 1970s, when the women's liberation movement challenged male domination and disco brought together LGBT minorities, the economic crisis gradually showered hopes. In the early 1980s, punk explode exploded on this scene with its "No future!" motto. From the 1950s through to the present day, each generation has initiated its cultural revolution through music, literature and cinema. On an eclectic and electric soundtrack - from 1950s jazz to 2000s rap through funk, disco, rock'n'roll and techno - Aurélien Guégan and Marie Durrieu paint a nervous and refreshing portrait of revolts of youth over the ages. An ode to idealism and the fury for life.
