Content of the Lesson: Is it possible to make an eco-friendly toilet? And can we make use of faeces and urine, usually treated as waste? Xenius investigates the taboo subject of toilets. Everyone uses them, but nobody talks about it: the toilet is a taboo subject. For most of us, urine and feces are waste. But in this programme “Xenius” takes a closer look at our day-to-day business and exlore how clean and build a dry toilet. As the name suggests, this toilet works without water. Instead of a rinse, straw meal is sprinkled and the excretions do not go to the sewage treatment plant, but are processed into plant fertilizer. The nutrients it contains, such as phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium, are useful and valuable in growing plants, for example. The special thing about the dry toilet: urine and feces can even be collected separately. In this way, the nutrients in the excretions can be used even more efficiently. In addition, "Xenius" looks back into the history of toilet culture. How did people do their business during the Roman Empire or in the Middle Ages?
