Content of the Lesson: Ultraorthodox Jewish communities in Israel and the USA, are a parallel world, separate from the rest of society and governed by religious rules. Religious principles govern every aspect of daily life: women devote themselves to the maintenance of their homes and the education of children, men to the study of religion. Some find this way of life too constraining and break out with many coming to Germany to start a new post-orthodox life. Why do they choose the country responsable for the holocaust? The answer is complex. In Israel, according to estimates, this religious community has lost 10% of its members, which is becoming a growing trend. These are mostly young adults who, against all odds, find refuge in Germany. Akiva Weingarten grew up in a New York suburb in a Satmar cult. In 2014, he left his wife and three children to start a new life in Berlin, with no family, no bank account and no formal education. Today, this rabbi is helping other "leavers" with practical as well as theological support. This is also the case of Moshe Barnett and David Lamberger, who have been living in a shared apartment in Dresden for a few months. They are not only looking for a new life, but also for a new relationship with God.
