Content of the Lesson: Mixing in-depth excavation work and scientific analysis of the forgotten city of Naachtun, this documentary traces the dawn and dusk of the once-flourishing Mayan civilisation. For two thousand years, the Maya have built kingdoms and developed a civilisation of incomparable wealth. Then they mysteriously disappeared. Buried deep in the rainforest in the far north of Guatemala, Naachtun, although discovered in 1922, was not excavated for decades. Since 2011 however an international team of scientists led by CNRS researchers Philippe Nondédéo and Dominique Michelet - and composed of archaeologists, but also a geographer, an archaeobotanist, an epigraphist, a ceramologist, an archaeozoologist and an ethnologist - have been trying to understand why the longevity of this city surpassed that of other Mayan kingdoms. Why did Naachtun survive the eighth-century collapse of its powerful neighbours for almost two hundred years? Archaeological road trip A real archaeological road trip through Central America, this documentary sets off to discover the monumental cities of Teotihuacan, Tikal, Calakmul, El Mirador and Copán, which have all been both rivals and allies of Naachtun. Deciphering the political history of Naachtun through its remains, including multiple stelae, the team also explores the relationship between its inhabitants and the surrounding jungle. The singularity of this approach not only makes it possible to reconstruct, as closely as possible, the daily life of the Maya in the forest (in particular their many rituals and ceremonies linked to nature) but also to obtain new answers to the famous mystery of the forest and collapse of their civilisation. The film also reveals surprising 3D models of Naachtun. Never has the representation of a Mayan city been so complete.
