ARTE Documentary: The Colours of our Origins | ARTE Documentary

Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Schoolchildren from one establishment in the Paris suburbs choose an object from their family home to share. A mosaic of diversity in one class. In 2017, the Fabien college in Saint-Denis offered Claire Doutriaux a "journalist's residence" in a fourth grade class whose students all came from diverse backgrounds. Immersed alongside these bilingual, even trilingual adolescents, the creator of the magazine Karambolage asked them, in collaboration with their French teacher Maxim Kaba, to present an object, a word, a recipe or a rite from their parents' country of origin. From the pestle from Reunion Island brought back by Axel to Sabrine's Bangladeshi lotus flower, from the 10 Tunisian dinar note on which Hamza's great-great-grandfather, the poet Abou el Kacem Chebbi, appears, to the Kosovar bureks made by a father from Chérif to the Senegalese bazin dressed by Salihou, each student evokes the role of these respective objects in his or her culture and what it personally represents for them. Cultural mosaic "Look at us, love us, let us be us": it was with these words that one of the students described the project, spread over a school year. Defeating certain preconceived ideas on integration, this montage of small films takes us on a surprising journey around the globe, and sketches a portrait, as funny as it is touching, of young people who combines different cultures with ease.
