ARTE Documentary: Viking Settlements in Greenland l ARTE Documentary

Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Archaeologist Peter Eeckhout takes us around the world to reveal the mysteries of ancient civilisations. According to mediaeval sagas, Viking explorer Erik the Red settled in Greenland in the year 986. How did these settlers survive in such a hostile land? In 986, after being banished from Norway and then Iceland, Viking leader Erik the Red set out to conquer an uninhabited land: Greenland. With its austere coastline, bare, windswept valleys and difficult-to-navigate fjords, "the green land" is far less welcoming than he had imagined. How did the Vikings manage to conquer this extreme territory and settle there permanently? Archaeologist Peter Eeckhout joins a team of Franco-Danish researchers onsite. If the Scandinavian explorers did not die of hunger or cold on these hostile lands, why do archaeologists not find any trace of their presence after the 15th century? ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
