Content of the Lesson: Summer in Butte Bellevue is played out on the streets. It's a working class district of Saint-Mauront, in the heart of Marseille. Residents keep busy as best as they can, as the buildings around them slowly crumble. This is the first documentary by Marseille journalist Philippe Pujol, who won the 2014 Albert-London Prize. To access the Butte Bellevue, Kader spins on a scooter at high speed and without a helmet through the serpentine streets of the 3rd arrondissement of Marseille. It’s summer, the jets of water are blazing and the cries of kids echo in the alleys. Here, in one of the poorest neighborhoods in France, there are no more shops. Even the local Communist Party have packed up. "We were abandoned," says Ms. Tabet, nicknamed "the sheriff" by the local youth. Despite ongoing poverty, some of the locals still find themselves dreaming about a better future. Ex-thug Kader sees himself as a film actor, whilst Nour, who fled to the neighbourhood to escape her family's abuse, imagines a brighter future for herself in London. Father Vincent, a colourful priest, takes care of this whole "village", where Italian, Arabic and Comorian are spoken. Over the long, hot summer residents worry about the opening of a new, two-way street and the problems this will bring. They don't want their neighbourhood to lose its soul. For his first film, Marseille journalist Philippe Pujol immersed himself in the closed world of Butte Bellevue, located in the Saint-Mauront district, as close as possible to its inhabitants. In "Marseille" he captures stories of damaged lives and the idleness of a youth long forgotten. His documentary also shows the collective impetus against the planned sanitization of the neighborhood, mutual aid and moments of joy between neighbours. This documentary is both luminous and touching and shows a forgotten corner of France.
