Then the women's movement of the 60s and 70s came around and a group of women began to open up the genre, taking home a number of Hugo and Nebula awards, paving the way for writers like Octavia Butler and Margaret Atwood. One of these women was Ursula K. Le Guin. Her story The Left Hand of Darkness takes the tropes established by the Golden Age writers and turns them on their head. The protagonist, Ai, is the perfect picture of a Golden Age protagonist. A man of logic and reason who believes in material wealth as the benchmark of success of a society. But the planet he interacts with is not one that follows logic or has any interest in material goods. And most strangely of all, there is no concept of fixed gender.
