Tenerife | The Canary Islands | ARTE.tv Documentary
The island of Tenerife is famous for its volcanic cone of Mount Teide, which is over 3,700 metres tall. Tenerife has been shaped by this volcanic activity. While violent eruptions are rare nowadays, earthquakes remain relatively frequent on the island. Off the coast of Africa, in the middle of the Atlantic, the Spanish archipelago of the Canaries – sculpted by millions of years of intense volcanic activity – presents a vast array of varied landscapes that give each of the seven islands its own character. . The island of Tenerife, famous for its volcanic cone of Teide which culminates at more than 3,700 meters above sea level, is marked by the imprint of fire and volcanic activity. If today violent eruptions are rare, earthquakes remain relatively frequent. The Volcanic Institute of the Canaries monitors the activity of the volcano, in order to prevent risks in the archipelago. Due to its conical shape, the island also has a special microclimate? : clouds are rare there and there are almost three hundred cloudless days a year, which makes it an unparalleled place for observing the sun. In the caldera of Teide, the observatory of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands has installed Gregor, the largest solar telescope in Europe.
