South Africa: Segregation, 30 Years After Apartheid I ARTE Documentary

In July 2021, riots and looting in South Africa's Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces left more than 300 dead, and extensive damage. The unrest didn't spread to the rest of the country, but it brought questions of ongoing inequality and racial justice to the fore. One team of neighbourhood volunteers think they have the answer. In Hout Bay, located a few kilometers from Cape Town, there is a certain peace, despite the economic difficulties of a large part of the population. The city is divided into 3 parts: a white district -The Valley-, a mixed-race district -Hangberg- and a black district -Imizamo Yethu-. A small-scale South Africa, barely a few square kilometers. In 30 years, almost nothing has changed. The boundaries between neighbourhoods still exist in the minds of many residents. A road separates the world of the rich with large villas and vast land and that of the overcrowded and unsanitary townships. But this geographical proximity promotes solidarity with the poorest, especially since the start of the Covid pandemic.
