A Female Mayor in Afghanistan I ARTE Documentary

Zarifa Ghafari is the mayor of the conservative provincial city of Maidan Shar. When she first became mayor there were protests by men trying to bar her from entering the town hall. She has big dreams for the future of her country and her city, but as the youngest and first ever female mayor in Wardak province, the odds are stacked against her.  In Afghanistan, women in leadership positions are rare. While for most of his male collaborators working under a woman's orders is an unrecognised experience, many men view her assumption of the mayoralty very negatively. 60% of rural areas in Afghanistan are controlled by the Taliban. Wardak province is no exception: the few women who walk the streets all wear the traditional burqa. Vast territories of lawlessness which favour the activities of mafia groups on which Zarifa has declared war. Regularly threatened with death threats, she remains confident.
