Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, Mixtures (Chemistry)
Practice Tests available at http://bit.ly/CHEMTESTS Sign up to Socratica Chem Club for your free Classifying Matter handout: https://bit.ly/FreeChem2 In Chemistry Class, almost always we are talking about reactions involving PURE SUBSTANCES. But in the real world, we rarely stumble upon pure samples of anything! Almost everything we come in contact with is a mixture, rather than a pure element or compound. Chemists classify matter according to how pure the sample is. This means you need to learn to distinguish between the following: pure substances (elements or compounds) and mixtures (homogeneous or heterogeneous). We’ve created a flowchart to make this kind of classification easier. You can jump to sections in the video here: 0:00 What is Matter? 0:39 What are Pure Substances? 1:25 Flowchart to Classify Matter 2:11 What’s the difference between Elements and Compounds? 3:08 The Law of Constant Composition aka the Law of Definite Proportions 4:58 What are Mixtures? 7:03 Homogeneous Mixtures vs Heterogeneous Mixtures 9:25 Pop Quiz - classify these materials! 11:37 Challenge Exercise - separate sea salt out of beach sand WATCH NEXT: Physical vs Chemical Changes: https://bit.ly/ChemicalOrPhysical We made a FREE HANDOUT with the Classifying Matter flowchart for you.
