Mont Blanc: An Impossible Climb I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Tove Jansson and the Moomins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjRfrpKeDU0&list=PL-eZcc0GI8-WayBFjqXP7kdBzRd4b9mwM&index=49 The 4,808-meter mountain, Mont Blanc, with its characteristic silhouette is considered the "roof of Europe". Since the first successful ascent in 1786, many mountaineers have attempted to climb it. Nowadays, with over 15,000 visitors attempting the climb each year, the mountain suffers from the excessive number of visitors. Yet, the peak of Mont Blanc is not easy to reach and each year mountaineers die trying to get to it. Mont Blanc seems imperturbable but the truth is: it has actually lost 2 meters due to global warming. The emblematic mountain also hides a whole other story: the story of an English woman who proved that feminism could reach for the sky. Since the 18th century, Chamonix became one of the favourite holiday destination of the English aristocracy. From 1850 onwards, Mont Blanc became a vast playing ground for the English elite mountaineering club, nicknamed the 'Alpine Club'. During the 'golden age' of mountaineering, the Alp's summits were conquered one after the other. Lured by these exploits, at the end of the 1860s, a young English heiress, Isabella Straton came to the valley together with her friend Miss Lloyd, 10 years her senior. The women made a trip through France, climbed peaks in the Pyrenees and finally ended up in Chamonix. At the time, female mountaineers were something out of the ordinary. But 10 years later, on 29th January 1876, Isabella Straton together with her mountain guide attempted a challenge that the best rope team in Europe at the time had just failed: climbing Mont Blanc in the middle of winter. 🗓 Available until the 05/02/2023 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
