Birth Control: Emancipation or Forced Sterilisation? - ARTE

WATCH: Hysterectomies in India https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K1qOkHvyQw Used by millions of women, the IUD, or intrauterine contraceptive device, is one of the most common objects world wide. Today, with about 159 million people using it, it is the third most common contraception method in the world. The history of contraception, however, is an ambivalent one. It is a history of feminist struggles and the medical establishment of intimacy, of self-affirmation. It's a history of female liberation but also of male domination. The IUD has been invented and re-invented by doctors throughout history. Bibia Pavard, historian of femininity and feminism, analyses the historical ambiguities of this modern intrauterine device, which actually draws on ancient practices. The IUD tells a dual, partly contradictory story, between forced contraception and sexual freedom, which is linked to the development of gynaecology and the constraints placed on the female body, while revealing the gradual emancipation of women. 🗓 Available until the 08/06/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
