WATCH: A History of Hygiene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05gP5GlOTB8&list=PL-eZcc0GI8-WayBFjqXP7kdBzRd4b9mwM&index=71 The mid-1960s: The future had begun and had been on everyone's lips since the Soviet satellite "Sputnik" opened a new era at the beginning of October 1957. The future and its favourite venue, space, were in fashion as never before.A winking reminder of a time thirsty for utopia. On 5 October 1957, a radio signal sent America into a deep-seated shock and the world into a frenzy. The noisy beeping of the Russian satellite "Sputnik 1" spread like wildfire around the globe. The Soviet Union had launched the first artificial earth satellite into orbit. The space race was on and a new era was dawning: the space age. In the coming decade, the future - and its favourite venue, space - was in vogue like never before: Atomic-breasted space heroines entered the stage of science fiction comics and films, futuristic sounds conquered the dance floors. On 17 September 1966, the future also began on German television, or more precisely: on this day, the broadcast of the seven-part science fiction series "Space Patrol - The Fantastic Adventures of the Starship Orion" started and set out to write television history. In short: the future had begun, and it promised great things. The documentary recalls this utopian time between the "Sputnik" launch and the moon landing. What ideas drove people half a century ago when they thought about their future - our present? How did the sheer boundless enthusiasm for technology and the optimistic belief in the future find cultural expression? The film lets contemporary witnesses have their say, such as the actor Wolfgang Völz, who played Lieutenant Mario de Monti in "Space Patrol Orion", or the French comic strip creators Jean-Claude Mézière and Pierre Christin, who created a space saga with their comic strip "Valerian and Veronique" that has fascinated readers since the 1960s. The documentary is a tongue-in-cheek journey back in time to the fantastic future of the 60s; a future that is already the past today.
