The major construction projects in new cities and new hotels by the sea need building material, i.e. concrete, thousands of cubic meters of it. One of the main ingredients of concrete is sand. The great demand in the natural resources has led to the emergence of a black market. At the very bottom of the illegal system, thousands of workers with shovels, baskets and donkeys go to the beaches to shovel a ton of sand daily - for just 6 euros a day. The middlemen do the big business: they sell the sand from the sea under the table to the building contractors, who, in view of the low prices, close both eyes to the fact that the unwashed sand from the sea still contains salt: This salt causes the concrete to crumble after a few years - leading buildings to collapse. The environmental impact of these illegal activities is tangible too: beaches and dunes simply disappear. They will take decades to recover. Only a few Moroccans dare to mess with the sand mafia but it seems as if those involved in the shady business enjoy protection from the very top.
