Kyrgyzstan: A Democratic Miracle? I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Nagorno-Karabakh: Childhood in a War Zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rRwj68BwFA&feature=youtu.be Kyrgyzstan, the Central Asian country with a population of over 6 million, emerged in 1991 as a former republic of the Soviet Union after the dissolution of the USSR. Since its independence, Kyrgyzstan with its beguilingly beautiful landscapes, has remained politically open, warm-hearted and democratic. Politically, it therefore seems to stand in stark contrast to its neighbours Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, all of which are ruled by dictators. It was only in October 2020 that the previous president, Sooronbaj Dzhenbekov, was deposed on charges of electoral fraud after violent demonstrations by the Kyrgyz citizens. Sadyr Dzhaparov thereupon became acting Prime Minister, and was elected President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan with 80% of the vote in the early presidential elections on the 10th of January. How did this turn of events come about? Our reporters went in search for clues to answer this question.
