An energy source consisting of water that has been decomposed by electric current, hydrogen can be used to generate all forms of energy that we need: for households but also for industry and transport. As early as 1870, Jules Verne predicted that “water is the coal of the future.” But today, hydrogen remains a dream, say sceptics: too expensive, too complex, too dangerous. Supporters of hydrogen, on the other hand, praise its sustainability and safety. So, will hydrogen be the energy of the future? At the Technical University of Munich, scientists are researching fuel cells - and know what the hydrogen economy of the future could look like. So far, no country in the world operates a hydrogen economy. But Germany now seems to be developing into a pioneer. An increasing amount of the country’s electricity is produced from renewable energy sources. However, electricity only accounts for a fraction of the Germany’s energy consumption: heating and hot water for households is provided by oil and gas, transport is running by diesel and petrol to a large extend. Industry still burns great amounts of fossil fuels. Hydrogen could pave the way for a true energy transition towards a carbon neutral future: as an energy allrounder, it could be used to fuel a variety of branches including heating, transport and industry.
