This is the story of a migrant and a passionate artist of great invention in the tumultuous years between 1910 and 1930. "My art needed Paris like a tree needs water." Chagall, a Russian-born painter, etcher, designer and lithographer, was born in Vitebsk to a very religious Jewish family. In 1910, Marc Chagall, like many artists magnetized by the creative frenzy of the French capital, left the Russian Empire to drink from the source of the avant-garde. If Fauvism - which liberated its colors - and cubism infuse his paintings, the young painter, also shaped his own universe, at the crossroads of Jewish, Russian and French cultures, from his studio at La Ruche in Montparnasse. Chagall lived in Paris during the Roaring Twenties, which permeated his palette, before the rise of nationalism and anti-Semitism darkened his horizon. Whilst living in Paris he met Apollinaire, Delaunay, Leger, Modigliani and Lhote. A European modernist, he was also somewhat influenced by cubism. He created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including drawings, painting, stained glass, book illustrations, ceramics, stage sets and tapestries. In addition to paintings, he made illustrations for the Bible, Gogol's Dead Souls and La Fontaine's Fables. After Matisse's death, Pablo Picasso remarked that "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".
