A victory for an ancient indigenous people is, however, a scandal for many Swedish hunters as the decision revives old tension in Swedish far north. The use of land since time immemorial is the argument which, in the Supreme Court of Sweden, tipped the scales in favor of the Sami community in the village of Girjas. Indeed, these indigenous people had fished and hunted for several thousand years in a territory of the Far North where they also grazed their reindeer. Until the Swedish state confiscated more and more land and, with it, their livelihood. Of the 20,000 and 40,000 Sami who live in Sweden, around 4,700 are nomadic reindeer herders. They regularly gather their herds to slaughter a few animals, sell their meat and fur. Ylva Sarri, from a breeding family, says Swedish hunters' dogs disrupt their work because they scare the deer. She welcomes this new law which has upset Joachim Almgren, one of the 300,000 Swedish hunters. Great amateurs of hunting and fishing, the Swedes do not want to give up their leisure time. What if other Sami communities followed the example of the Girjas herders group and took the case to court to obtain exclusive hunting rights? Would the welfare of the reindeer or the Swedish hunting rights be given priority?
