In January 2020 the presidents of Turkey and Russia opened a new gas pipeline: Turkstream. The line supplies Turkey and Southern Europe with Russian gas, via the black sea and bypassing Ukraine. Putin and Erdogan are two complex figures who are nevertheless keen to play the role of 'guardians of the black sea'.
