Content of the Lesson: On the Mongolian steppe climate change is making life difficult for the traditional nomadic way of life. Many are moving into the city to try to find work where they live in shanty towns on the outskirts. Two inhabitants per square kilometer, minus 40 degrees in winter, plus 35 in summer and a persistent drought...Welcome to Mongolia. Here, climate change and overgrazing threaten the traditional way of life of the nomads. During the winter of 2009/2010, for instance, 10 million animals died, that is: 22% of the total herd. This situation resulted from extreme summer drought during which the herds were unable to build up any fat reserves for the winter. This crisis was a disaster for the shepherds and the Mongolian economy as half of the population lives on livestock. In 2018, hundreds of thousands of animals once again perished due to snow and freezing cold. More and more shepherds are subsequently abandoning herding. Most of Genghis Khan's heirs have ended up on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, where only their yurts signify their nostalgia for the steppes ...
