To the west and north, along the Norwegian coast, it spreads into thousands of islets. It's a dramatic landscape of forest, ice and sea. Winter here can last almost eight months. Tucked away under snowy terrain, these often desert expanses are the territory of the Sami, the only indigenous people in Europe, and, especially since the 17th century, that of the Finns and other Scandinavians who gradually settled here.
