Its dramatic landscape was shaped by the ice that has formed and thawed over the past two and a half million years. In the west, in particular, the landscapes bear the mark of this country's tormented geological history, between mountain lakes with crystal clear water, prehistoric glaciers and trough valleys topped by vertiginous peaks. At the heart of the chain, the immense Hardangervidda plateau, the largest in Europe at Alpine level, is characterized by its tundra landscapes, interspersed with lakes, torrents and marshes.
