ARTE Documentary: In Search of Lost Sleep | ARTE Documentary

Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: Over the last fifty years, humans have lost on average 90 minutes of sleep per night. More people suffer from disrupted sleep patterns as the pressures and attractions of modern life take their toll on our nightly rest. Why are we having trouble sleeping? And what can we do to sleep better? A look at the latest research into insomnia. The human body is reluctant to adapt to the absurdities of modern life: it takes revenge at night for stress, a sedentary lifestyle, staggered work schedules and harmful lighting. This results in an increase in sleep disorders, sleepless nights through nocturnal apnea and narcolepsy. Sleeping well plays a major role in the regulation of metabolism. Lack of sleep increases the risk of obesity, diabetes or even Alzheimer's disease, as researcher Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester has shown. In sleep the brain "purges" itself: it eliminates toxins and sorts through its learning. False Sleep Merchants Researchers are now increasing clinical trials to study the causes of sleep disorders, their effects on health; attempting to offer an alternative to sleeping pills. They argue that sleeping pills are prescribed too frequently - as these constitute an income for pharmaceutical companies. Harmful to memory and powerfully addictive, they are like anesthesia and provide false sleep, that is in no way restorative. However, an alternative exists, including the most natural solutions (group therapy, mindfulness meditation, sophrology, microsiestes) as well as the most high-tech such as the light therapy sessions practiced at the sleep center of the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris or helmets with electric impulses and new generation drugs… These alternatives are not supported by general health insurance, however. Join ARTE as we travel across France, Germany and the United States with an overview as ambitious as it is exhaustive of the latest scientific advances around sleep disorders, fed by testimonials from researchers, scientists and patients in search of milder nights.
