ARTE Documentary: Borneo - The Last Forest Nomads | ARTE Documentary

Teacher or professor: ARTE Documentary
Subject: Science
Content of the Lesson: The Penan people live in the last virgin rainforest in Sarawak, the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo. The forest, on which their traditional way of life depends, is under threat from the palm oil industry which is destroying it at an alarming rate. Located on the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo, the equatorial forest of Sarawak is still home to some 40 indigenous peoples, including the Penan. In the space of a few decades, 90% of its area has been wiped out by the timber and palm oil industries. The Penan, whose culture and history are rooted in this luxuriant nature and whose way of life is threatened, have been under pressure to the sedentarization imposed by the central power since the 1950s. But they still resist, as evidenced by individuals such as Peng Megut, one of the last Penan to perpetuate nomadism, and his uncle Selai Sega.
