Content of the Lesson: Expelled from France for "subversive activities", Omar Blondin Diop joined the Fundamental Institute of Black Africa in Dakar, and challenged Sengal's leader with his egalitarian and anti-colonialist speeches. Diop died in custody, hanged in his cell on May 11, 1973, at the age of just 26. His death, which his relatives denounced as a political assassination, caused a wave of outrage to rip through the country.  "Omar is a figure that any young African can relate to". Born in 1946, Omar Blondin Diop grew up in a Muslim family cradled in revolutionary theory. Maoist militant, the young man brandished his political convictions in La Chinoise de Godard and in the lecture halls of Nanterre, participating in the March 22 Movement led by Daniel Cohn-Bendit back in May 1968. Expelled from France for "subversive activities", he joined the Fundamental Institute of Black Africa in Dakar, feeding on situationist readings. He created a stir with Léopold Sédar Senghor through his egalitarian and anti-colonialist speeches. In 1971, members of the "group of arsonists", including two of Omar's brothers, were sentenced to heavy prison terms for having set fire to the Ministry of Public Works and for having attempted to attack President Georges' procession that was then visiting Dakar. Faced with this repression, Omar Blondin Diop left the École normale supérieure in Saint-Cloud, and followed brief military training in a fedayeen camp in Syria. Facing a later arrest, the young revolutionary was found dead in his cell on May 11, 1973. His death, which his relatives denounced as a political assassination, raised a wave of anger across the country, leading to a liberalization of power and to the birth of an artistic avant-garde.
