Is The New Testament Historically Reliable || Godless Engineer vs Edward Andrews

Teacher or professor: Godless Engineer
Subject: Science, Politics
Content of the Lesson: Today we are debating whether the New Testament is historically reliable or not. Edward Andrews thinks that it is historically reliable and I don't think it is. I present many reasons to not consider it either historically reliable or textually reliable. The issue with textual reliability is that the earliest complete manuscript that we have was created in the 4th century. Codex Vaticanus and Sinaiticus represent a snapshot of the Bible as it existed in the 4th century. Using those codexes, as well as two others from the 5th century, we are able to track how the Bible’s content changed throughout time. We find that errors and deliberate changes were rampant after the 4th century. So next, let’s turn to look at the Gospels. The Gospels are ripe with historical inaccuracies. I don’t feel the need to go over every single historical inaccuracy in the Gospels but Let’s touch on a few. In Matthew, the slaughter of the innocents is not recorded anywhere in secular history yet it represents a pivotal moment in the birth of Jesus. Josephus wrote extensively on Herod and fails to discuss this particular incident. Mark, as well as Matthew and Luke, discusses the mysterious darkness that covered the land when Jesus died. Since later Gospels used Mark as a source, it’s understandable that they would include this. It also means that Mark is the sole source of this information and it is not referenced elsewhere in secular history. The New Testament is not in any way reliable.
