Content of the Lesson: ARTE follows the story of two years in the life of a tough Belgian high school trying to give difficult children an education. For many of the students from disadvantaged backgrounds, this could be their last chance for a better life. The shutdown of the Arcelor Mittal blast furnace in 2016 dealt a blow to Seraing, a town located in the suburbs of Liège. Most of the adolescents enrolled in Saint-Martin college, next to the factory, come from families facing unemployment and precariousness. "They are going through things that we would not dare to imagine", explains Jérôme Chantraine. Abandoned by his parents, Jérémy has trouble concentrating. Vanessa lost her father to a drug overdose. After two years of dropping out, she has raised the bar beautifully, and dreams of becoming a lawyer. Director Thierry Michel follows the eventful life of Saint-Martin college. A tribute to the "sport of combat against fatality and injustice" his film captures the ups and downs of the establishment - from the headmistress' irritation with the absenteeism of teachers to successes and end-of-year hugs and the commotion caused by the death of a former student, killed while robbing a petrol station. Sequences show the adolescents confiding in front of the camera, with astonishing maturity, about school, their family or their future. This documentary explores both the courageous efforts of students and teachers but also shows the daily difficulties, such as lack of motivation. All in all this is a fascinating window into the "last chance" offered to these students by the school.
