Content of the Lesson: Our hearing gives us vital, detailed information about the world around us. But this everyday miracle is under siege from the sounds of modern life. Transport, ear phones and other modern noises are taking their toll. Many of us may need hearing aids later on in life. It is a gradual and often imperceptible process: many people lose their hearing without even realising it. For specialists, a good part of the population risks losing 50% of their hearing well before they reach old age. Since the industrial revolution, acoustic stimulation (mechanical noise, urban densities, amplified music, etc.) put a strain on the ears, not to mention stress. To address these growing problems, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the University of Southern California are working to revitalize deep cells in the inner ear with medication. On the Göttingen campus, scientists are studying the transmission of sound stimuli to restore hearing through optogenetics (the alliance of optics and genetics), by reactivating the nerves in the ear by means of stimulation. These experiments, among others, show how much hearing is now placed at the center of global health issues. Hearing allows us to locate ourselves in space, to keep our balance or to become aware of dangers. This documentary attempts to detail its inner workings while informing us, through numerous experts and researchers, of the threats that await it. The WHO estimates that 450 million people worldwide have hearing loss, including 34 million children.
