Content of the Lesson: This juvenile detention center in the Ardennes Forest, near the Belgian-French border, is cold and violent. Stuck in a prison without daylight, young offenders serve several years in prison. They live in this confined space in an atmosphere of despair and anger. Their horizon ends at the barbed wire fence. This documentary explores young people in a Belgian prison, the daily life of a handful of delinquents and repeat offenders. The action veers between sports sessions, one-on-one lessons or support groups, moments of tension, relaxation and lucidity. Dalhad can no longer remember whether he ever confessed to the judge one of the charges against him. Franco thinks detainees should be sorted like household waste: "a bin for cardboard boxes, another for garbage ". Rolph, who is anxiously awaiting transfer, understands the difference between "the educator, who is there to educate the young, and the supervisor, who is there to watch them." Some prisoners protest against the regulations which deprive them of a Skype session if they have not participated in a compulsory activity. "The important thing", the director reminds them, "is that we guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of each person" and that each individual can "do something with [their] time here."
