Content of the Lesson: The Chachapoyas of Peru fascinate archaeologists and historians. Between the 8th and the 16th centuries this reputedly fierce warrior people practiced an unusual mortuary ritual. In Peru, on the borders of the Andes and the Amazon rainforest, a people and its remains have long left archaeologists perplexed: the Chachapoya. Between the 8th and 16th centuries, these famous bloodthirsty warriors practiced a strange cult of the dead. Many bones were found in the walls of the fortified city of KuĂ©lap. Human-headed sarcophagi and mausoleums built on the cliff have also been discovered. The anthropological study of the remains, combined with the patient work of the archaeologists, has shed light on the relationship the Chachapoya had with their deceased: an intimate and happy bond, far from the violent image that one had of them. Archaeologist Peter Eeckhout sets out to unravel their secrets...
