Star Talk Chat Room – A Deep Dive Into the Cosmos, with Neil deGrasse Tyson – Week 4
Teacher or professor: StarTalk
Subject: Astronomy
Content of the Lesson: On this episode of StarTalk Chat Room, we’re taking a deep dive into episodes seven and eight of Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Given that we are currently living in the “Corona-verse,” Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by video call by his intrepid comic co-host Chuck Nice. We start with episode seven, “The Search for Intelligent Life on Earth.” You’ll learn about the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) located in China which has a 500m diameter disc, making it the largest radio telescope in the world. Neil tells us what it was like to film at the telescope itself. Find out why radio waves are the most ideal form of communication across the galaxy. Neil and Chuck ponder if aliens were trying to contact us via radio waves before we invented a way to detect them. You’ll hear from executive producer Jason Clark to talk about one of his favorite moments from the series. Discover more about the writing process behind Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Then, we explore the intelligent life on Earth that you might have overlooked: bees. Neil explains how you can get a cosmic perspective studying something so close to home. After the break, we welcome long-time friend of StarTalk, Madame Saturn herself, Carolyn Porco. Episode eight, titled “The Sacrifice of Cassini,” explores the journey of the Cassini space probe’s mission to explore Saturn and its moons. Carolyn was the leader of the Cassini Imaging Team and she takes us inside the control room on one of the most epic journeys of our time. You’ll hear about the overlap Cassini had with the Voyager mission, including Carolyn’s own involvement. Discover more about the famous “Pale Blue Dot” photo. We look at Carl Sagan’s influence on inspiring the public with scientific information and how Carolyn continued that initiative with Cassini. Lastly, we ponder what the next mission will be and what tantalizing information could be out there awaiting our discovery.
