Content of the Lesson: In the early Baroque period, visions and ecstasies were thought by some Christians to represent the ultimate experience of God. A vision (visione) was a brief glimpse of heaven. Ecstasy was an even higher state of rapture in which God lifted a veil, as it were, to reveal something of the indescribable beauty of the celestial paradise. 'Caravaggio-Bernini. Baroque in Rome' (14 February to 7 June 2020) is an exhibition of more than 70 masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bernini and their contemporaries.
