Moving the teeth attached to the ballast (the weighted section mounted to the circuit board by the 4 spring mounts) relative to the teeth attached to the circuit board changes their capacitance and that is converted by formula to acceleration on that axis. There are three such devices (one each in the x/y/z axis) in your iPhone or iPad. There are also in other models of smart phones.
