Content of the Lesson: So this guy has these bizarre ideas about gyroscopes. He thinks that in order to detect the spin of the earth using a gyroscope, as Bob from Globebusters did, you first have to make the earth stop rotating. I'm not sure why you would need to do that...I don't understand what would make him think this. I explain how due to the rigid body and precession aspects of gyroscopes, the Coriolis force would cause a 15-degree shift per hour. Of course, a mechanical gyroscope would have to be very big in order for it to be affected by the Coriolis force but fiber optic or ring laser gyroscopes would be affected by the sagnac effect.
