Paris, May 1931. Black culture was in fashion with the legendary Bal nègre evenings in full swing whilst a large scale colonial exhibition displayed the subjugated peoples and cultures of the French empire. At this time, a group of researchers set off on an unprecedented ethnographic mission through Africa hoping to better understand the indigenous peoples. Crossing from Dakar to Djibouti they collected a huge range of artefacts destined for the Museum of Man (Musée de l’homme). But was this well-meaning mission really a great looting of precious cultural artefacts?
