Hungary's Trauma I ARTE Documentary

A century ago the Treaty of Trianon formally ended World War I between the Kingdom of Hungary and the allied powers. Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory at Trianon which is still a contentious subject in Hungarian politics and society. Budapest in the summer of 2020: In front of the Hungarian parliament, head of government Viktor Orbán inaugurates a controversial monument: the Monument to National Unity. The names of more than 12,500 places that once belonged to Hungary before the borders in Europe were redrawn by the victorious powers after the First World War are engraved on the walls. The country lost two-thirds of its territory at that time. One in three Hungarians suddenly lived abroad because he or she lived in areas that today belong to Romania, Ukraine or Slovakia, for example. Families were torn apart, the economy collapsed. The great Kingdom of Hungary - part of the powerful Habsburg Dual Monarchy - suddenly became a small country. The reason for this: the Peace Treaty of Trianon, signed about 100 years ago. Indignation, anger and grief. The sentiments of the Hungarians back then are still alive today, and it is not only nationalists who try to make political capital out of them. Today, about 1.8 million Hungarians live in neighbouring countries. Viktor Orbán has been wooing Hungarians abroad in Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine for years with dual passports and voting rights. Time and again, this leads to tensions in the centre of Europe. The documentary shows how the "Trauma of Trianon" reaches into the present and what effects they have on coexistence in today's Europe.
