The market is home to about 200 shops including many street food joints & other products ranging from fresh food and fish to clothing & discounted brand goods. There's two theories on the naming of Ameya. The first is that the name came from ameya (飴屋, candy shop), because of all the candy stores that lined the street in the early post-war era when sugar was hard to come by. Even now, there's still stores selling candy. The second theory is that it refers to アメリカ (America); there used to be stores selling surplus American army goods just after World War II. In either case, it's now commonly referred to simply as ameyoko (アメ横). ---------- ►GOT MERCH? https://teespring.com/stores/ericsurf6-merch Use Promo Code: ERICSURF6 for 10% off at checkout. ►Instagram (Follow for Day in the Life Japan Stuff): https://instagram.com/ericsurf6 Support me on Patreon (Check Reward Levels): https://www.patreon.com/ericsurf6 ---------- ►SUBSCRIBE for New Videos EVERY Wednesday & Saturday: https://www.youtube.com/ericsurf6?sub... ---------- Winners of Snack Packs from the last video: 1.
